jae copp - my illusions architect

'my illusions architect' is a new series of works by exciting gold coast based artist jae copp. for the past 12 months jae has undergone an experimentation process of both medium and technical skills, involving various paper treatments, hand stitching and intricate brush based illustrations. jae has long used allegories and abstract twists to take personal and social views, both good and bad, out of context into a surreal, and at times almost seminonsensical way. through this series, the artist evokes stories of a non-definitive space in time that reflects a postapocalyptic era, as central figures take form to mimic learnings of a bygone civilisation in pursuit of redeeming social harmony, respect and understanding for one another, and responsibility for the planet they now inhabit. armed to the teeth with the much needed strength and environmental compassion, his characters begin repairs on the broken prospects of a new beginning. this show is not to be missed, jae's technical brush skills must be seen in person. opening this thursday 2 september 2010 6-9pm and continuing until 19 september at gorker gallery, cnr of gore and kerr st, fitzroy (melbourne). more info here - myillusionsarchitect.blogspot.com

ze frog and toad

trent whitehead @ monster children

self-taught sydney artist, trent whitehead will present a new body of work titled 'the thinnest of betweens' at monster children gallery. with this series, whitehead attempts to represent a disparate and essentially unusual view of past and future. just like a dream is the mere sorting and cataloguing of a day's events by our subconscious, whitehead's paintings on wooden panels are subtly filled with experiences of his own existence. the wondrous and often humorous paintings make up one half of the exhibition, the other half consists of his distinctive masks, which have become a significant component of his artist practice. the masks, lending themselves to the life-giving process of construction, are three dimensional embodiments of the delinquents from his paintings. pieced together from geometric shapes and painted with the same memphis-like colour palette and omnipresent patterning as the paintings, a certain intensity and vitality is introduced. this show is not to be missed, it opens thursday 22 july 2010 6pm and continues until 7 august at monster children gallery, burton st, darlinghurst (sydney). more info here - www.trentwhitehead.com

its been a while since we did a monthly random... we have been too busy painting! westsyde connection is a skateshop slash art studio/gallery and all round crazy venue type place in dulwich hill (sydney), over the summer a bunch of sydney's talented artists have been heading over to paint some of the many walls there, artists including beastman, phibs, numskull, yok, s-t-e-p-h, bridge, max berry, john doe, smc[3] and onion. this months random gives a look into the process of these walls being painted and an insight into this place they call westsyde connection, recently home to an underground event featuring the tom tom crew. expect to see more art/music/skate events happening there in the future.click here or the link on the right to check out all the pics.

everfresh at wasteland, perth

melbourne's everfresh studio has an exhibition opening this saturday 8 march from 8pm at wasteland gallery, 44 king street, perth. featuring artwork by phibs, sync, rone, reka, meggs, wonderlust, makatron and the tooth. the exhibition continues until 15 march. the everfresh crew have played a major role in the rise and recognition of street art in australia, and counts among its members some of the most respected, innovative and widely recognised underground artists in the country. so if you're on the west side - go check it out!

ghostpatrol & miso - papier foret

opening next friday 7 march 6-9pm is 'papier foret', an exhibition by melbourne based artists ghostpatrol and miso. its at per square metre gallery, 191-193 johnston st collingwood. the show continues until 16 march. both ghostpatrol and miso will also be participating in our second 12x12 exhibition along with 10 other australian artists, more info coming soon.

two - 1000 cans

inspired by the japanese story of sadako sasaki and the 1000 paper cranes, 1000 cans is set to be a brilliant debut exhibition for the japanese born melbourne based artist hiroyasu tsuri, locally known as 'two'. in may 2006 two began painting old spray cans, turning them into 1000 separate works of art. for two, the long term solitary project symbolises more than the opportunity to show his work, it represents a visual diary of how his skills and ideas have progressed over the intensive 18 month process. the exhibition opens in melbourne at the bus gallery, 117 little lonsdale st, this wednesday 27 february 6-8pm, until 18 march 2008. then showing at the global gallery in sydney from friday 4 april until 18 april 2008. more info at nice produce.

kill pixie - everything's a-ok

'everything's a-ok' opens at until never, 2nd floor 2-5 hosier lane (enter from rutledge lane) melbourne this wednesday 20 february 6pm-8pm. the exhibition features new works by kill pixie, and will also be the official melbourne launch of his new book titled 'kill communication', published by izrock pressings. the show continues until march 29 and the gallery is open wednesday to saturday 12-6pm. be sure to buy his book, it looks rad and features 64 pages of fine art paintings and works on the street. you can also get a copy of the book through monster children gallery in sydney or at stupidkrap.com

ctrl+p - kid9 at ruban rat

josh 'kid9' thorsen has a show called 'ctrl+p' opening this friday 15 feb at ruban rat designer toy store and gallery, 423 king st newtown (sydney). there will be drinks served from 7pm and the show runs until march 6.

GRRRLs exhibition

happy new year, ruban rat, sketch city

happy new year! 2008 is going to be a big year for WATIM with some great exhibitions and interviews lined up. so stay tuned... in the meantime check these out...

ruban rat is a new designer toy store and art gallery located at 423 king st, newtown (sydney). they are kicking off 2008 with and the robot trouble exhibition by brendan zymantas, opening on saturday 26 january 6pm-9pm and the show continues until 15 february. they also have some other great exhibitions planned for this year including kid9, bucket o thought, plump oyster and girlie pains. check their myspace for more info.

sketch city is an interactive music and art event offering artists a space to network and create new work in a social and relaxed environment. there will be canvases to paint on, tables to draw on and all paint and drawing materials provided for free. featuring live painting by drew (pictured above) and itch, drawing battles, djs and more! it's on sunday 20 january from 5pm til late at st jeromes, caledonian lane, melbourne. more info on their myspace page.

ink advance - miso, ghostpatrol, acorn

opening wednesday 12 december 6pm-8pm is 'ink advance', showing the collaborative and individual works of the very talented ghostpatrol, miso and acorn. exhibited for the first time is australia these drawings, interactive installations and publications have been collated after being sent between melbourne, vienna, edinburgh, vancouver and berlin. the show is at green-wood gallery, 1 hotham st, south melbourne and continues until the 23rd december.

sydney siders head down to monster children gallery this thursday 6 december from 6pm for their annual end of year group show. this years show will feature works on paper by some of the world's best artistic talent, including aussie artists anthony lister, biddy maroney, dylan martorell, kill pixie, lilly piri, nathan gray, sonny day, trent whitehead and more.

it's all happening on the west side this weekend, with the overgrowth exhibition on friday 7 december from 6pm-11pm at formallyknownas gallery, lvl1, 38 pier street, perth. remember this show is for one night only. more info here.

melbourne based artist meggs from everfresh studio is having a solo exhibition called 'alter egotism' opening this friday 23 november 6-9pm at utopian slumps, 5/25 easey st, collingwood. the show continues through until sunday 2 december. more info here.

sydney based artist ape seven is also doing a solo show opening this friday 23 november 6-9pm at sydney's gallery fourty four, 44 little oxford st, darlinghurst. the show is called 'amatic' and continues saturday and sunday 12-4pm.

hip pop, the gallery, cut & paste

united galleries is proud to present 'hip pop', an annual show exhibiting the best of young fresh australian talent. in conjunction with father riley's youth off the streets, the exhibition showcases both 'hip' and 'pop' art by james hancock, andrew hmelnitsky, paola talbert, jarrod taylor, ben frost (pictured above), jane fontane, buni and simon lovelace. the show opens this friday 16 november at 6pm and is showing until 21 december 2007. more info here.

finally this saturday 17 november at the metro theatre in sydney is the cut & paste digital design tournament. watch as 8 designers go head to head, wacom to wacom. for the crown, they'll have to spin an idea with their own style in three, 15 minute rounds as projectors stream their living designs across the metro. the contestants are daryl prondoso, dave follett, haline ly, andrea innocent, matt huynh, michael birchall, morten rowley and oat montien. should be a great night... more info here.

sydney heads should get down to oxford art factory on friday 9 november to see the 25 metre installation featuring the twisted pop & street styled characters and illustrations by numskull. the sydney stencil festival begins its 2 week program today, starting with the exhibition opening tonight at pine st creative arts centre, 64 pine st chippendale from 6-9pm. check the website for a detailed program of the festival.

the 12x12 exhibition was a great success! - thanks to everyone for coming down to aMBUSH gallery to check it out - we did sell a lot of canvases on the opening night, but there are still some artworks available for purchase (including the above piece by dyzla).

welcome to the new look WATIM site - it was always the plan to design a much nicer site once we got past 10 issues - so here it is!

the new site includes an improved news/blog column that you are reading right now - in the near future we will be getting some australian artists on board to help us out with posting news items here, so we can better keep you up-to-date with what's going on in the australian art scene - so keep checking back often to find out about local artists, exhibitions, events and projects that are happening all over the country.

we are also in the process of setting up the WATIM online store - the shop will be selling selected artworks, prints, books, magazines, clothing and other items produced by some of australias best established and emerging artists, illustrators and photographers - if you are an australian artist interested in selling your products through the WATIM online store, please contact us.
